description

Learning is most effective when activities are both enjoyable and challenging, and when they are chosen to match the needs of individuals and the intended outcomes. We use real adventurous activities and carefully balance the risks and benefits to provide powerful learning experiences.

Owned by Sunderland City Council, we have been running outdoor education courses since 1962. Our beautiful location, comfortable venue and professional team enable us to provide a welcoming, friendly and supportive residential setting. At Derwent Hill children and young people develop awareness of and respect for themselves, other people and the environment. We also work with adults on a range of leadership and Team building courses.

Derwent Hill occupies a beautiful 28 acre estate bordered by the river Derwent, overlooking Derwent Water, one mile from Keswick.

There are two adjoining facilities: the Education Centre (mainly for school groups), the Training Centre (mainly for training courses, small conferences and high-quality group accommodation) and a small campsite for group bookings.

All activities at Derwent Hill are led by our team of professional tutors. We work with all ages and design activities to achieve agreed learning or recreational outcomes.

Watersports
Canoes, kayaks and funboats are ideal for exploring Derwent Water or the Derwent river.

Rocks and Mountains
Rock climbing, abseiling and Ghyll scrambling in the Borrowdale valley.

Ropes challenges
Derwent Hill’s Big Swing has legendary status! The High Challenge course has a range of individual and team challenges. Our low ropes course offers a gentler challenge.

Orienteering
Courses in our grounds and in local forests.

Team Tasks
We have a great range of tasks to challenge teams, ranging from short initiative problems in the grounds to complex day-long projects in Borrowdale. Tasks can be designed to suit all ages and abilities, and to focus on specific objectives and learning outcomes.
