Criteria for membership

AHOEC mission, aims and objectives

To promote excellence in the management of centres providing personal development through high quality outdoor education.

  1. To promote all-round personal development through outdoor education and residential experience.
  2. To develop, establish and maintain good and safe practice in outdoor education.
  3. To encourage awareness of, and active respect for, the environment.
  4. To provide a regional and national forum for members.
  5. To liaise with other bodies as appropriate.
  6. To speak publicly as a national authoritative body on matters concerned with residential and/or outdoor education.
  7. To act in support of members where appropriate.

Section 1

The Association is an Association of individuals who are or may be qualified for membership at the time of their election, in terms of Article 3, Section 2 (a) hereof.

Section 2

There shall be four classes of membership, defined as:-

(a) Full members:

  1. Those who are in employment as a Head of Centre (or otherwise titled) and having responsibility for the management of an established centre or centres for outdoor education.
  2. Those who are in employment as a Deputy Head of Centre (or otherwise titled) and who may from time to time assume responsibility for the management of an established centre or centres for outdoor education.

(b) Associate members: those who do not meet the criteria for full membership (by virtue of non-compliance with the requirements of Article 3, Section 2 (a) hereof but whose regions feel they can make a contribution to The Association.

(c) Honorary membership: may be offered to anyone who in the view of the Executive has made a significant contribution to the workings of The Association or the wider field of outdoor education.

(d) Co-opted members: Those who are co-opted for specific periods and purposes as determined by the Executive.

Section 3

No person may be elected a Full Member who does not comply with the specific requirements set out in Article 3, Section 2(a) hereof.
